What makes this such a special time of year? Beautifully decorated homes. Joyful parties. Lovingly wrapped gifts. These are part of it for sure.
But to me, Christmas is mostly about enjoying time with family and friends. It’s about stepping out of the normal routine and creating experiences that make a lifetime of memories.
Over the years, our household has evolved Christmas traditions that are as much a part of the holiday as Santa’s reindeer. Here are a few of my favorites:
Paper whites and pine-scented candles in every room.
Family night in the city: Fifth Avenue window shopping, the Rockettes at Radio City and dinner at Tavern on the Green followed by a stroll in Central Park.
Christmas Eve caroling with the community on God’s Acre, a small park in the heart of our New England village.
New sets of pajamas for everyone on Christmas Eve.
Exchanging of handmade gifts among siblings.
Quiche for breakfast on Christmas morning.
A bottomless pot of wassail (apple cider, orange juice, cinnamon sticks and cloves) on Christmas Day.
What are your family’s Christmas traditions?
